Mai 1911, in Wien verstarb.
Yet he did not acquire this knowledge through student travels, but was a self-taught man who learned above all by »observing the works of formerly famous and accomplished composers«. Bach knew, arranged and performed numerous works by Italian master composers. His repertoire spans the music of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries (Palestrina, Frescobaldi) right through to the compositions by his contemporaries (Vivaldi, Porpora and Pergolesi). The sonatas, concertos and vocal works of these composers were sources of inspiration to Bach in many ways. Far from him to imitate them, but they had a lasting influence on his compositional style, causing him to take a new direction both in his instrumental and vocal works. Thus, the Italian concerto and aria forms make an appearance in Bach’s cantatas from as early as 1713-1714, and, true to his work motto – »everything must be possible« – he even composed chorale choruses following the model of Italian concerto movements later in life. In the 1730s, he turned his attention more to masses by Italian composers. They may ultimately have motivated him to compose his own masses. The fact that Bach simultaneously composed a »Concerto after the Italian taste« and an »Overture in the French style«, both published in 1735, is proof of his command of the different styles of his time. For Bach, who scarcely ever left Central Germany, Italy was always a far-away, inaccessible land. Only his youngest son, Johann Christian, ventured to undertake the journey to the promising South: in 1755, he travelled to Bologna, where Padre Martini – a music scholar and glowing admirer of his father – took pains to further his musical education. Did the 20 year-old youth fulfil a wish that his father had never succeeded in realising?

There are always several sides to the programmes of Leipzig’s Bachfest. In 2011, we will be commemorating the anniversaries of two important musical personalities: Franz Liszt, the 200th anniversary of whose birth we will be celebrating on October 22, and Gustav Mahler, who died one hundred years ago, on May 18, 1911, in Vienna. For both composers, the works of the great cantor of St. Thomas’ were of ground-breaking significance. Liszt, who had been familiar with Bach’s works since he was a little child, was among the first pianists to include the Well-Tempered Clavier and the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in their concert repertoire. He published commented scores of Bach’s keyboard works; selflessly, he was involved in the publication of the first complete edition of Bach’s works – the Bach-Gesamtausgabe – as one of the founding members of the Bach-Gesellschaft. But the work of the cantor of St. Thomas deeply inspired him not just as a publisher and interpreter, but also as a composer.

Mahler played the Well-Tempered Clavier from his early years. In 1898, he planned a performance of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion in Vienna. Revealingly, the premiere of his Fifth Symphony in 1905 featured the motet »Sing to the Lord a new song«. Mahler, who owned and untiringly studied the completed Bach-Gesamtausgabe, was fascinated first and foremost by the sacred cantatas, which opened up new perspectives to him when in the throes of severe personal crisis. He once manifested his veneration of the great cantor of St. Thomas’ with the following words: »It is unbelievable how much I keep on and on learning from Bach … All the vital seeds of music are united in Bach, as the world is in God.
